CHAOS CARBON FLEX
The chaos carbon flex was developed in 2006 with one mission in mind, improved performance. It has evolved over the years and with many applications and a array of materials. Earlier versions used our proprietary stringer system made up of bamboo, carbon fiber and high density foams. These innovative stringer systems were further advanced and used as internal strut systems built into the blank eliminating many of the issues conventional stingers have. We also played with various lay-ups of carbon fiber from fully wrapped rails to partially wrapped rails, surface laid carbon and internally laminated carbon. Through trial and error we found that attaching the suspension system internally to the lead drive fin boxes had the greatest impact.
Conventional stringers are set through the entire plane of the board, surfacing at the top and bottom. However, stringers made of wood, pvc or any various materials are always much more dense than the surrounding foam. This results in a raised or proud stringer in time as the less the dense foam around it compresses, so much that it often breaks and cracks the outer glass shell compromising the board’s integrity. Wooden stringers were first used as polyurethane foam blanks started to replace balsa wood as core material. The wooden stringer was glued into the rough center of a blank to reduce flex during the shaping process. Early laminating procedures were crude at best, and it was quickly determined that boards with wooden stringers tended to break less, as well. Although, there are a number of recognized issues with center stringers they have endured for decades. Flash forward and one of the most recognized issues is an effect that stiff materials placed in the middle of the board create. Aside from dramatically impacting the flex and causing a less natural flex, the amount of flex and resulting twisting becomes greater towards the rail with distance from the center. Today, there is a lot of talk about torsion and how to exploit, dampen and control it.
Chaos CARBON FLEX 2.0 INtegrated SUSPENsION SYSTEM
The Carbon Flex 2.0 Integrated Suspension System (ISS) provides the rider with an unparalleled level of responsiveness and pop in a stronger, lighter package. The reinforced u-shaped channel loads and unloads energy in a positive manner literally propelling the rider into turns and up out of the water. More pop and speed with less effort.
